Local: One Sustainable Ocean – Portugal Pavilion – Wave Stage
The side event “Women 4Our Ocean” is promoted by Business as Nature in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC), the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Common House of Humanity, with the involvement of the Union of Portuguese Speaking Capital Cities (UCCLA) and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and is part of the “Women 4OUR CLIMATE” Initiative, which mobilizes the Portuguese speaking countries to the World, women for the Climate, for the Ocean, for the promotion of a green economy, bringing together women scientists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, educators, activists, mothers, who in their daily lives, develop their activities and make their consumption and lifestyle decisions, contributing positively to the sustainability of the planet, to gender equality and to the participation of women in climate action.
The event “Women 4OUR OCEAN – from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries to the World, to be held as a side event in the framework of the United Nations Ocean Conference, aims to disseminate and enhance the role of Portuguese speaking women in their relationship with the Ocean and in the daily action and commitment they put into its preservation, protection and regeneration, actively contributing to “SAVE THE OCEAN, PRESERVE THE FUTURE”.
This event will give special emphasis to the dissemination of initiatives promoted by women from the community of Portuguese-speaking countries, and their role as “agents of change” and “influencers” in different areas: scientific, activism, entrepreneurship within the Blue Economy and Environmental Education, contributing to the implementation of SDG 14, driving solutions and innovative approaches in the field of green technologies, for a sustainable management of oceans and marine resources, to the threats to their health and ecology, to the problems of marine litter and pollution, acidification, illegal fishing, contributing to start a new chapter of global action on oceans.
The event also aims to contribute to the presentation of disruptive approaches in the Climate-Ocean Nexus, by contributing to the discussion on the protection of the commons, namely the recognition of the Stable Climate, as a common heritage of Humanity.

- Marine Conservation on Príncipe Island – Estrela Matilde
Estrela Matilde is the Executive Director of the Príncipe Foundation, a local NGO on Príncipe Island, which enhances economic and social development of local communities through biodiversity conservation. In 2018 Estrela won the Terre de Femmes award by the Yves Rocher Foundation and recently won the international conservation Whitley Award by the Whitley Fund for Nature.
- Modelling and Fisheries Management – Susana Garrido
Susana Garrido is a senior researcher at the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), biologist specialized in Marine Ecology and Biodiversity.
- Zero litter and Participatory Solution for Maritime Plastics – Amina Cássimo
Amina Cássimo is President of APETUR – Association of Small Hotel and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Mozambique Island and promoter of several projects, such as My neighbourhood, My Beach.
- Marine Biotechnology and Climate Change – Diana Madeira
Diana Madeira is a Researcher, CESAM, University of Aveiro, marine biologist, specializing in understanding how marine organisms respond to climate change and pollution over generations. Diana Madeira has won several awards, including the L’Oreal Medals of Honor for Women in Science 2018 (L’Oreal, FCT/UNESCO).
- The Sea Guardians of the Sado Estuary – Sandra Lázaro
Sandra Lázaro is a fisherwoman and ocean activist from Ocean Alive. The Ocean Alive is the first cooperative in Portugal dedicated to the protection of the ocean, developing awareness campaigns integrated in a marine education program, and monitoring and evaluation of marine prairies.
NEXUS CLIMATE -OCEAN:
- The Importance of Climate as a Common Heritage– Paulo Magalhães
Paulo Magalhães is a jurist and researcher at CIJE- Center for Legal and Economic Research – University of Porto. He is the President of Common Home of Humanity, an International Association that is based in the University of Porto that proposes a new global legal construction based on new knowledge about the functioning of the Earth System.
