We are creating a network of Women who can identify, catalyze, and coordinate the implementation of intervention projects in rural areas, especially in protected areas, and who can be local drivers of regeneration, recovery of ecosystems and biodiversity, sustainable use of endogenous resources, and promotion of projects, contributing to the transition to a low-carbon economy resilient to climate change.
Guardians of Nature
"Network of women guardians of nature and sustainable development of the rural world."
The involvement and empowerment of women as guardians and advocates for sustainability in rural areas is an essential element for the realization of a development model based on the appreciation of the territory and natural values.
The creation of the “Network of women guardians of nature and sustainable development of the rural world” will contribute to implementing management models closer to those who are in the territory, allowing the recognition of the value of natural heritage by local communities and the understanding and appropriation of the purpose of biodiversity by society, as fundamental to the country’s development, contributing to improving its conservation status and to the regeneration of its ecosystems.
The project will develop in territories that include areas within the National Network of Protected Areas:
- North Coast Natural Park (Esposende municipality)
- Montesinho Natural Park
- Serra da Estrela Natural Park
- São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve / Paul da Arzila Natural Reserve
- Sado Estuary Natural Park
- Vale do Guadiana Natural Park
- Ria Formosa Natural Park.

The project “Network of women guardians of nature and sustainable development of the rural world” is part of the Women for Climate Movement, from Portuguese-speaking countries to the World.
This network of women guardians of nature plays a crucial role in building a more equitable and sustainable future. By valuing and strengthening the role of women in these areas, we are ensuring a more comprehensive and holistic approach to nature protection and the promotion of sustainable development of local economies.
We are looking for women committed to supporting climate mitigation and adaptation solutions. Women who advocate for nature, who lead actions to ensure the resilience of our territory, taking care of and safeguarding natural and cultural heritage and preserving biodiversity.
What can the Guardians expect from the project?
- Participate in a cooperation platform, where they can share knowledge, experiences, and ideas with other women who also want to protect nature;
- Promote the sustainability of low-density territories;
- Develop skills and knowledge in areas such as sustainability, climate change, ecosystem services and natural capital, sustainable agriculture (organic, integrated production, regenerative, permaculture), water resources, and forest management;
- Expand the contact network and enhance the visibility of their projects and initiatives;
- Opportunities to present their projects to potential partners and funders.
Note: this project does not have funds to financially support the projects of the women guardians who will join the network.
What is expected of the Guardians who join the Network?
- That they intend to develop (or are already developing) in the territories of the protected areas covered by the project (or adjacent areas) initiatives related to ecosystem recovery, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture and forestry, the transition to a circular economy, the recovery of traditional activities, gastronomy, and ecotourism, as well as other activities that contribute to the preservation of natural, cultural values and endogenous resources of our protected areas, and for greater resilience of territories against climate change and desertification. These initiatives can consist of sustainable businesses, civic and non-profit projects, or interventions that combine both aspects.
- That they participate in the 24-hour face-to-face training program to be held in each covered protected area.
- That they are motivated to participate in spaces for collective learning, sharing, and cooperation.
